Objective:
To review existing knowledge about female genital mutilation, to recommend for adoption standard definitions and a classification for the different types of female genital mutilation, to consider appropriate research methodologies and formulate guidelines for data collection and analysis, to discuss the effectiveness of different types of intervention for the prevention and elimination of female genital mutilation, and to identify needs and intervention strategies for future action.
