The special issue provides an up-to-date analysis of how countries in the Region of the Americas are changing their health care systems in order to promote more effective health services and more equitable access to them. One series of articles describes trends and outcomes of reforms that began in the 1990's. Another set of articles looks at the future of reform efforts, including the relationships between the countries' health and social security systems, the challenges of dealing with persons excluded from health care, and essential public health activities. Also included are case studies on the experiences of six countries in specific areas of health sector reform.
